En el marco del Hispaania Maailma Festival, te invitamos nuevamente a una noche de speed-friending, donde podrás conocer a nuevas personas hispanohablantes en un ambiente relajado y divertido.

El evento tendrá lugar en VAAT Taproom, un espacio con un ambiente acogedor y buena compañía, ideal para la práctica del idioma y la creación de nuevas amistades.

Comment encourager la communication en cours de français auprès des lycéens

Le cours de français est souvent le seul espace où les élèves peuvent pratiquer la langue, mais ils ont souvent peur de se tromper et d’oser parler. Comment les encourager à s’exprimer davantage, à donner leur avis et à participer plus activement ?

Dans cet atelier, nous explorerons diverses méthodes pour améliorer l’expression orale et diversifier les interactions, notamment par le biais d’activités ludiques. Les exemples utilisés proviennent des méthodes “Les Globe-trotteurs” et “Carrousel”.

La formation sera animée par Amandine Quétel.

Après une dizaine d’années passées dans le réseau culturel français à l’étranger (Mexique, Sainte-Lucie, Espagne) en tant qu’enseignante et coordinatrice pédagogique, Amandine a choisi en 2017 de réorienter sa carrière vers l’édition.

Elle collabore étroitement avec Éditions Maison des Langues, en contribuant à la création de ressources pédagogiques pour les jeunes (Les Reporters, À La Une, Diaporama, Les Blogueurs, Les Globe-trotteurs) et pour les adultes (Défi). Elle réalise également des vidéos pédagogiques pour les enseignants (Les Tutos du FLE) et anime des formations à travers le monde.

Amandine est également cofondatrice des Fabuleuses du FLE, experte associée au FEI (Forum des enseignants innovants) et formatrice certifiée TV5MONDE.

How to encourage communication in French lessons among secondary students

For many students, the French classroom is the only place where they can practice the language, yet they often fear making mistakes or speaking up. How can we encourage them to communicate more, express their opinions, and participate more actively?

In this workshop, we will explore various techniques to enhance oral expression and diversify interaction in the classroom, including playful activities. Examples will be drawn from the textbooks “Les Globe-trotteurs” and “Carrousel”.

The training will be led by Amandine Quétel.

After nearly a decade working in the French cultural network abroad (Mexico, Saint Lucia, and Spain) as a teacher and pedagogical coordinator, Amandine shifted her career to publishing in 2017.

She collaborates closely with Éditions Maison des Langues, contributing to the development of learning materials for young learners (Les Reporters, À La Une, Diaporama, Les Blogueurs, Les Globe-trotteurs) and adults (Défi). She also creates educational videos for teachers (Les Tutos du FLE) and conducts training sessions worldwide.

Amandine is also co-founder of Fabuleuses du FLE, an associate expert at FEI (Forum des enseignants innovants), and a TV5MONDE certified trainer.

Examples will be taken from the Nuevo Reporteros Internacionales materials, which offer pedagogical solutions to support teenage Spanish learners.

La Casa de Verano Sprinckthal data del siglo XVIII y fue construida en el mismo lugar donde se encontraba una casa de verano del siglo XVII. Su nombre proviene de una histórica fuente de agua cercana, ubicada al otro lado de la calle (en bajo alemán „sprenk” o „sprinck”).

Durante el recorrido, hablaremos sobre la historia de la Casa de Verano Sprinckthal y de las casas de verano en Tallin – cuáles han perdurado, cuál era su función y cómo han cambiado con el tiempo.

Sprinckthal Summer Manor dates back to the 18th century and was built on the site of a 17th-century summer residence. The manor got its name from a historic water spring located across the street (in Low German „sprenk” or „sprinck”).

During the tour, we will explore the history of Sprinckthal Summer Manor and Tallinn’s summer manors – which ones have survived, what role they played, and how they have changed over time.

The tour will be conducted in Spanish – a great opportunity to practice the language and learn about history at the same time!

The tour will be led by Merilin Tali, the development director of Hispaania Maja, who has studied history and will share fascinating stories about the past of this unique place.

Como parte del Hispaania Maailma Festival, te invitamos a una noche inspiradora con Peeter Loit, quien compartirá sus experiencias de viaje y aventuras en España.

Peeter Loit es un artista escenográfico y decorador cuyo trabajo lo ha llevado a los teatros de Estonia y Finlandia – trabaja en la Ópera Nacional de Finlandia en Helsinki y ha participado en producciones cinematográficas. Además de su carrera artística, es un apasionado cicloturista, que ha explorado casi todos los países europeos en bicicleta desde el año 2000. Sin embargo, España ocupa un lugar muy especial en su corazón – pasa tres o cuatro meses al año allí, descubriendo diferentes regiones, montañas y paisajes culturales. Andalucía y la Sierra Nevada son especialmente queridas para él, y siempre vuelve a ellas.

En esta charla, Peeter hablará sobre sus viajes en bicicleta por España, comenzando con el Camino de Santiago de Compostela y recorriendo Barcelona, Granada, Málaga y Cádiz. As part of the Hispaania Maailma Festival, we invite you to an inspiring evening with Peeter Loit, who will share his travel experiences and adventures in Spain.

Peeter Loit is a scenic artist and decorator whose work has taken him to theater stages in Estonia and Finland – he works at the Finnish National Opera and Ballet in Helsinki and has also participated in film productions. In addition to his artistic career, he is a passionate cycling traveler who has been exploring almost all European countries by bicycle since 2000. Spain, however, has a special place in his heart – he spends three to four months there each year, discovering different regions, mountains, and cultural landscapes. Andalusia and the Sierra Nevada mountains are especially dear to him, and he keeps returning to them.

During this conversation evening, Peeter will talk about his cycling journeys across Spain, starting from the Camino de Santiago de Compostela and traveling through Barcelona, Granada, Malaga, and Cádiz. He will also share insights into his hiking experiences in the mountains, nature exploration, village life, and national parks, as well as his journey of learning Spanish and how the language has shaped his experiences.

He will also talk about his time in the Las Alpujarras region – his cycling trips through local villages and other eastern provinces, his way of moving with the bicycle, and the stunning beauty of the Alpujarras region.

Toni Jokiniitty es un guitarrista finlandés de flamenco. Ha estudiado y trabajado en Sevilla y actualmente es uno de los guitarristas flamencos y compositores más reconocidos de Finlandia. Ha publicado el álbum Promesa y cinco sencillos. Actualmente, trabaja tanto como acompañante de cante y baile flamenco como artista solista.

Claudia Lenaerts (Ševtšenko) se graduó en interpretación y dirección en la Universidad de Tallin y posteriormente estudió coreografía durante cuatro años.

Trabajó en la Ópera Nacional de Estonia durante 20 años, creando coreografías y bailando en varias óperas, producciones de teatro y películas en Estonia y Letonia.

Comenzó sus estudios de flamenco en la escuela de danza Helsinki Tanssiopisto, para luego continuar su formación en la escuela de flamenco Carmen de las Cuevas en Granada y en diversas academias de baile en Sevilla, Jerez, Córdoba, Málaga y otras ciudades de España. Claudia Lenaerts (Ševtšenko) graduated in acting and directing from Tallinn University and later studied choreography for four years.

She worked at the Estonian National Opera for 20 years, choreographing and performing in various operas, drama productions, and films in Estonia and Latvia.

Her flamenco studies began at the Helsinki Tanssiopisto, followed by training at the Carmen de las Cuevas flamenco school in Granada and various dance schools in Seville, Jerez, Córdoba, Málaga, and other Spanish cities. She discovered flamenco through Romani dance performances in Finland, where she met flamenco teacher Mia Vasara.

Currently, Claudia works as a choreographer, director, flamenco teacher, and dancer at her own Claudia Flamencostuudio (formerly Claudia Ševtšenko Flamenco Dance Studio), which she founded in 1991. She performs in collaboration with flamenco dancers and musicians from both Estonia and Spain.

Claudia is the founder of the Estonian flamenco school.

Liina Fidelman graduated from the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre and furthered her studies at the Universität der Künste in Berlin, specializing in flute. She has played in many renowned orchestras and has received numerous awards in competitions.

She has explored classical music, flamenco, and Latin American music and has participated in various music projects. She started performing flamenco music four years ago and has collaborated with different musicians.

Ruber Veliz is a singer from Cuba who has studied classical singing and clarinet. He has explored various musical styles, including salsa, bachata, jazz, opera, pop, rock, funk, rap, and flamenco.

He has participated in various projects both in Cuba and abroad. Currently, he lives in Tallinn, working as a singer and percussionist.

Toni Jokiniitty is a Finnish flamenco guitarist. He has studied and worked in Seville and is currently one of Finland’s most renowned flamenco guitarists and composers. Toni has released the album Promesa and five singles. He currently performs both as a flamenco singer and dancer accompanist and as a solo artist.

Este curso breve ofrece una visión general de la historia de la literatura española a través de obras disponibles en estonio, con especial enfoque en la literatura española de los siglos XX y XXI.

En la primera sesión, haremos una breve introducción al Siglo de Oro de la literatura española (siglos XVI-XVII), destacando autores como Cervantes y los dramaturgos del Siglo de Oro. Luego, exploraremos la Edad de Plata, centrándonos en los novelistas del siglo XX como Miguel de Unamuno y Pío Baroja, así como en la generación de poetas a la que pertenece Federico García Lorca. También hablaremos de la literatura tremendista que surgió tras la Guerra Civil Española, caracterizada por una visión cruda de la realidad.

En la segunda sesión, analizaremos cómo los últimos decenios de la literatura española han reflejado los cambios sociales: la Guerra Civil Española, el proceso de urbanización, la transición a la democracia y el terrorismo de ETA. Nos centraremos en autores como Javier Cercas, Julio Llamazares y Fernando Aramburu. También hablaremos de algunos de los escritores contemporáneos más influyentes como Javier Marías y Enrique Vila-Matas. Además, destacaremos la diversidad lingüística y cultural de España, incluyendo la literatura en catalán y en euskera, con autores como Mercè Rodoreda y Bernardo Atxaga.

Mari Laan es traductora y editora de literatura en español y directora editorial de Toledo Kirjastus. Ha traducido al estonio obras como Nii see maailm on de Pío Baroja, Salamise sõdurid de Javier Cercas, Õmblejanna Madriidis de María Dueñas, Üleujutatud maja ja teisi jutte de Felisberto Hernández y Minu hammaste lugu de Valeria Luiselli, entre otras. Mari se graduó en Filología Hispánica en la Universidad de Tartu, donde también trabajó como docente. En su tesis de máster analizó la traducción de elementos culturales específicos, mientras que en su doctorado investigó la historia de la traducción entre el español y el estonio. También ha impartido clases sobre literatura española en la Universidad de Tallin y organiza el club de lectura de Hispaania Maja.

Sissejuhatus Hispaania kirjandusse / Introduction to Spanish Literature | €75 | April 5-6, 2025, 11:00-13:00

This short course provides an overview of Spanish literary history through works available in Estonian, with a particular focus on 20th and 21st-century Spanish literature.

In the first session, we will begin with a brief introduction to the Golden Age of Spanish literature (16th-17th centuries), featuring Cervantes and the playwrights of the Golden Century. We will then move on to the Silver Age, focusing on early 20th-century novelists like Miguel de Unamuno and Pío Baroja, as well as the generation of poets including Federico García Lorca. We will also discuss the tremendismo literary movement, which emerged after the Spanish Civil War and portrayed the brutal realities of post-war Spain.

In the second session, we will explore how literature from the last few decades reflects Spanish society’s transformations, including the Civil War, urbanization, the transition to democracy, and ETA terrorism. We will discuss authors such as Javier Cercas, Julio Llamazares, and Fernando Aramburu, as well as some of the most influential contemporary Spanish writers like Javier Marías and Enrique Vila-Matas. Additionally, we will highlight Spain’s linguistic and cultural diversity, covering Catalan and Basque literature with authors like Mercè Rodoreda and Bernardo Atxaga.

Mari Laan is a translator and editor of Spanish-language literature and editor-in-chief at Toledo Kirjastus. She has translated works into Estonian, including Pío Baroja’s Nii see maailm on, Javier Cercas’ Salamise sõdurid, María Dueñas’ Õmblejanna Madriidis, Felisberto Hernández’ Üleujutatud maja ja teisi jutte, and Valeria Luiselli’s Minu hammaste lugu. Mari studied Hispanic Philology at the University of Tartu, where she also worked as a lecturer. Dentro del Festival Mundo Hispano, te invitamos a una clase de prueba de español para que experimentes cómo es aprender el idioma en Hispaania Maja. Nuestras clases son dinámicas, prácticas y divertidas: desde el primer momento estarás inmerso en el mundo hispanohablante, dejando otros idiomas fuera de la puerta del aula.

La clase es apta para todos: tanto para principiantes absolutos como para aquellos que ya tienen conocimientos previos pero quieren conocer nuestro método de enseñanza. Si alguna vez te has preguntado si aprender español puede ser fácil, natural y agradable, esta es tu oportunidad para comprobarlo.

La clase dura 60 minutos y es totalmente gratuita.

El cajón es un instrumento de percusión de forma rectangular originario de Perú, que se toca con las manos. Es fácil de aprender y adecuado para todos, sin importar la edad o la experiencia musical previa. En el taller son bienvenidos tanto adultos como niños – no se necesita tener oído musical ni conocimientos previos de percusión. ¡Cualquiera que quiera explorar el mundo de los ritmos está invitado!

El taller será dirigido por Reigo Ahven, un reconocido baterista de jazz y pedagogo estonio. Ha estudiado percusión en varias instituciones prestigiosas, entre ellas el Conservatorio de Música Georg Ots de Tallin, la Academia de Cultura de Viljandi de la Universidad de Tartu y la Academia Sibelius. Reigo ha colaborado con numerosos artistas reconocidos y es uno de los fundadores del primer club de jazz de Estonia, Philly Joe’s. The cajón is a box-shaped percussion instrument from Peru, played with the hands. It is easy to learn and suitable for everyone, regardless of age or previous musical experience. Both adults and children are welcome to join the workshop – no musical ear or prior drumming skills are required. Anyone who wants to explore the world of rhythms is invited!

The workshop will be led by Reigo Ahven, a renowned Estonian jazz drummer and educator. He has studied percussion at several prestigious institutions, including Georg Ots Tallinn Music School, the University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy, and the Sibelius Academy. Reigo has collaborated with many well-known artists and is one of the founders of Estonia’s first jazz club, Philly Joe’s. In addition, he has led thousands of drumming workshops and firmly believes that music has the power to change the world.

El encuentro del club de lectura de Hispaania Maja del 4 de marzo será especial: además de la discusión sobre la novela “Sügismaastik” (“Paisaje de otoño”) de Leonardo Padura, contaremos con la presencia de Anneli Ramos Põder, cuya obra “Kuuba ühes hingetõmbes” también está inspirada en la historia y la realidad cubana.

En una noche de otoño, mientras el temible huracán tropical Félix se acerca a Cuba y el teniente de policía Mario Conde, conocido como el Conde, se sumerge en su angustia existencial ahogándola en ron por tercer día consecutivo tras haber presentado su renuncia, aparece un cadáver en una playa de La Habana. El asesinado, Miguel Forcade, era un alto funcionario del gobierno que, después de la revolución de 1959, se encargó de la expropiación de bienes artísticos y alcanzó una gran influencia, despertando sin duda envidias y resentimientos. A pesar de su posición privilegiada, Forcade decidió emigrar ilegalmente a Miami y, por razones desconocidas, regresó a Cuba poco antes de su brutal asesinato, como si intentara recuperar algo muy valioso que solo él sabía que existía.
El ex policía Mario Conde, quien por fin había logrado cumplir su viejo sueño de empezar a escribir, se ve obligado a dejar la máquina de escribir para esclarecer el caso.

Leonardo Padura (1955) es el escritor cubano contemporáneo más reconocido y traducido internacionalmente. Se le conoce como un intelectual independiente que combina en su obra tanto una narrativa accesible como una mirada crítica y analítica sobre la sociedad. Como muchos de sus contemporáneos, en los años 80 y 90, cuando las condiciones de vida en Cuba se deterioraron drásticamente tras la caída del apoyo soviético, Padura tuvo que decidir entre emigrar o quedarse. Optó por lo último. Su obra ha sido ampliamente premiada, destacando el Premio Nacional de Literatura de Cuba (2012) y el Premio Princesa de Asturias de las Letras (2015), uno de los galardones literarios más importantes de España.

“Paisaje de otoño” es la cuarta entrega de la serie de novela negra de Padura, “Las cuatro estaciones”, también conocida como “Cuarteto de La Habana”. Las novelas están ambientadas en La Habana de 1989 y cada una corresponde a una estación del año. El autor las ha definido como falsas novelas policiacas, ya que el entorno y los personajes son más relevantes que la resolución del crimen. En el centro de la historia se encuentra el teniente de policía Mario Conde, el Conde, quien en realidad desearía ser escritor.

En el Club de lectura de Hispaania Maja, todos son bienvenidos: quienes han leído el libro y desean compartir sus impresiones, y también aquellos que buscan inspiración para leerlo. On an autumn night, as the terrifying tropical hurricane Felix approaches Cuba and police lieutenant Mario Conde, known as “El Conde,” spends his third consecutive day drowning his existential crisis in rum after resigning from his position, a body is found on a Havana beach. The victim, Miguel Forcade, was a high-ranking government official who, after the 1959 revolution, was responsible for the expropriation of artistic assets, gaining significant influence and undoubtedly arousing envy and resentment. Despite his privileged position, Forcade chose to illegally emigrate to Miami but mysteriously returned to Cuba shortly before his brutal murder, as if he were trying to recover something extremely valuable that only he knew existed.

Former police officer Mario Conde, who had finally started pursuing his lifelong dream of becoming a writer, is forced to set aside his typewriter to investigate the case.

 
Leonardo Padura (1955) is Cuba’s most internationally renowned and translated contemporary writer. He is known as an independent intellectual who blends accessible storytelling with a critical and analytical view of society. Like many of his generation, he faced a difficult decision in the late 1980s and early 1990s when Cuba’s living conditions deteriorated dramatically after the collapse of Soviet support—whether to leave or stay. He chose to stay. His work has received numerous awards, including Cuba’s National Literature Prize (2012) and Spain’s Princess of Asturias Award for Literature (2015), one of the country’s most prestigious literary honors.

“Autumn Landscape” is the fourth installment in Padura’s crime novel series “The Four Seasons,” also known as “The Havana Quartet.” Set in Havana in 1989, each book corresponds to a season of the year. The author himself describes them as “fake crime novels,” where the setting and characters are more significant than solving the crime. The protagonist, Lieutenant Mario Conde, is a policeman who would rather be a writer.

At the Hispaania Maja Book Club, everyone is welcome—whether you’ve already read the book and want to share your thoughts or are simply looking for inspiration to start reading it. Our discussions have shown that by analyzing a book together, we discover new layers and details that enrich the reading experience.

“Dolor y gloria” (2019) cuenta la historia del director de cine Salvador Mallo (Antonio Banderas), quien ha llegado a un punto de declive físico que le sume en un vacío inesperado. Un vacío causado por la imposibilidad de seguir rodando películas. En su lugar, comienza a rememorar los momentos más importantes y, al mismo tiempo, más dolorosos de su vida: su infancia en los años 60, cuando sus padres se mudaron a la Comunidad Valenciana en busca de una vida mejor; su primer amor en los años 80 y la dolorosa separación cuando el amor aún estaba lleno de pasión; la escritura como única terapia para superar el dolor, y finalmente, el descubrimiento del cine como forma de vida.

Antonio Banderas recibió el premio a Mejor Actor en el Festival de Cannes por su interpretación, y Alberto Iglesias fue galardonado por la banda sonora de la película.

El personaje de Salvador Mallo es en parte Pedro Almodóvar y en parte ficticio. El propio director ha señalado que el personaje no es él, pero sí está en su cuerpo. Banderas lo ha definido como “auto-ficción”. Un dato curioso es que la casa de Salvador Mallo en la película es una réplica de la casa real de Almodóvar.

Special screening at the Hispaania Maailma Festival: “Pain and Glory” (2019) by Pedro Almodóvar

“Pain and Glory” (2019) tells the story of filmmaker Salvador Mallo (Antonio Banderas), who has reached a stage of physical decline that leaves him with an unexpected sense of emptiness. An emptiness caused by his inability to continue making films. As a result, he starts to reflect on the most significant – and also the most painful – moments of his life: his childhood in the 1960s, when his parents moved to the Valencia region in search of a better life; his first love in the 1980s and the painful breakup when love was still alive and full of passion; writing as his only form of therapy to overcome the pain, and finally, the discovery of filmmaking.

Antonio Banderas won the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival for his performance, and Alberto Iglesias received an award for the film’s soundtrack.

The character of Salvador Mallo is partly Pedro Almodóvar himself and partly fictional. The director has stated that the character is not him, but he is inside his body. Banderas has called it “auto-fiction.” Interestingly, the house of Salvador Mallo in the film is a replica of Almodóvar’s actual home.

En el marco del Hispaania Maailma Festival, te invitamos a una charla con Claudia Ševtšenko Lenaerts, quien hablará sobre el desarrollo del flamenco en Estonia y su evolución tanto aquí como en España. What is flamenco, and how has it developed in Estonia? How does an Estonian connect with such a passionate and emotional art form?

As part of the Hispaania Maailma Festival, we invite you to a discussion evening with  Claudia Ševtšenko Lenaerts who will talk about flamenco in Estonia and its evolution both here and in Spain. Claudia will share her personal journey into the world of flamenco, explain the essence and structure of this art form, and introduce its fundamental elements: singing, dance, and guitar.

During the evening, she will also share the artists and concerts that have most inspired her, accompanied by YouTube video clips to help capture their mesmerizing energy.

Claudia Ševtšenko Lenaerts is one of Estonia’s most renowned flamenco dancers and teachers. She has dedicated her career to flamenco as a dancer, choreographer, and cultural promoter. With years of training and performances in Spain, she has brought flamenco to a new level in Estonia. Claudia is the founder of the flamenco school in Estonia. She also runs her own flamenco studio. ¿Sabías que el español es el segundo idioma más hablado en los Estados Unidos? ¿Cómo ha evolucionado en este país y qué particularidades se pueden observar en diferentes regiones?

 

Hispaania Maja te invita a una fascinante velada cultural en la que nuestro profesor Enrique Rodríguez Sánchez hablará sobre la expansión del español en EE. UU., sus características y el Spanglish, un fenómeno lingüístico que mezcla el inglés y el español.

Enrique Rodríguez Sánchez estudió en la Universidad de Indiana, donde obtuvo una maestría en lingüística del español, y en la Universidad de Western Michigan, donde obtuvo una maestría en estudios del español. Vivió en Estados Unidos durante 10 años antes de mudarse a Estonia y compartirá su experiencia y conocimientos sobre el dinámico uso del idioma en este país.

Did you know that Spanish is the second most spoken language in the United States? How has it evolved there, and what regional variations can be observed?

Hispaania Maja invites you to an engaging cultural evening where our teacher, Enrique Rodríguez Sánchez, will discuss the spread of Spanish in the US, its unique characteristics, and Spanglish, the linguistic phenomenon that blends English and Spanish.

Enrique Rodríguez Sánchez studied at Indiana University, where he earned a master’s degree in Spanish linguistics, and at Western Michigan University, where he obtained a master’s degree in Spanish studies. He lived in the United States for 10 years before moving to Estonia and will share his experiences and insights into this dynamic linguistic landscape. 

The cultural evening will be in English.
